AQUATICS

Parent/Child Swim Lessons (ages 6 months-5 years)

The Parent/Child program is a water adjustment class for children 6-36 months of age. Class length: 30 minutes.

 

 

Preschool Swim Lessons (ages 3-5)

The Preschool program teaches water adjustment and beginning swimming for children.

 

School-Age Swim Lessons (ages 6 and older)

The school age swim program is designed for participants who have at least entered kindergarten. The classes are pupil-centered and use a problem solving, guided discovery teaching approach. The emphasis is on learning, not passing or failing. Each development level is divided into five components that include personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, personal growth, and rescue. In each of the levels skills and activities promote health and fitness. Class length: 45 minutes.

YMCA Silver Spring Piranhas Swim Team (ages 4-18)

Bronze Group (ages 4-7)

Must be comfortable in the water, able to swim one length on their front and back without stopping, and familiar with breaststroke and butterfly. Focus is on refining the freestyle and backstroke, and continuing to work on breaststroke and butterfly to ensure they are done properly and legally for competition.

Silver Group (ages 8-12)

Must know all four competitive strokes and be able to swim at least 200 yards continuously. Focus will be on correct technique for all competitive strokes to increase their efficiency. We will also be working on proper transition of strokes, starts and finishes. and increasing endurance and strength.

Gold Group (ages 13-18)

Must know and be legal in all four competitive strokes and able to swim at least 500 yards continuously. Focus is to continue improving on all strokes, starts, finishes and turns, along with increasing strength and endurance.

Adult Swim Lessons (ages 15 and older)

Our experienced instructors teach basic to advanced skills. Ideal for new swimmers or those who want to sharpen their swimming skills.

Level I (Beginner)

This class is for people who have a fear of the water or who have never taken a swimming lesson. Water adjustment, kicking and arm strokes, and confidence in deep water will be emphasized.

Level II (Advanced Beginner)

For those who can swim a short distance in shallow water with their faces in the water, this class emphasizes refining basic strokes and confidence in deep water.

Level III (Intermediate)

This class is for those who are comfortable in deep water and want to improve their form and learn new strokes with an emphasis on building endurance and mastering skills.

Adult Swim League

A competitive swim practice that helps members to refine their strokes, build speed and endurance, and improve their overall fitness levels.

Private Swim Lessons (all ages)

A great way to complement your YMCA group lessons or for those with special learning needs or circumstances, our private swim lessons can accommodate any age or ability level.

Specialty Aquatics

YMCA Lifeguarding (ages 16 and older)

Students must be at least 16 years old by the first day of the course and be able to swim 500 continuous yards. First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer are included as part of this program.

Aquatic Fitness

Exercising in the water has many benefits. It can improve your muscular tone, cardiovascular strength, and overall health. The water also provides resistance, allows for a greater range of motion, and acts as a cushion for feet, knees, and back.

Pre- and Post-Natal Workout

Physicians and fitness experts recommend water exercise during and after pregnancy. Mothers-to-be and new mothers will enjoy exercising together in a supportive environment while in shallow and deep water.

Shallow Water I/Pre- and Post-Natal Aerobics

Participants use movement to music in shallow water to improve their flexibility, endurance, and muscle tone. This program is designed for non-swimmers as well as swimmers.

Deep Water Aerobics I and II

Move to motivating music in the shallow water, which cushions your body for a low-impact workout. Aqua aerobics is a moderate-to-high intensity class that works your cardiovascular system and strengthens and tones muscles. It is a fun and supportive class for both non-swimmers and swimmers.

Water Aerobics for Special Populations (Arthritis)/Back Into Shape

This 45-minute class strengthens the back, neck, and abdominal muscles and helps increase range of motion and flexibility. It is designed for those with arthritis or other problems.

Aqua Kickbox

This shallow-water class combines all the traditional elements of kickboxing with the resistance of water to create a serious cardio workout.  Beginners and experienced kickboxers will benefit from this class.  This class is not recommended for those with knee, hip, or other joint issues/injuries.  Tu/Thu pm #02401-07

Aqua Yoga

Combines the therapeutic and buoyant properties of water with the energizing and harmonizing effect of yoga.  Focus is on stretching, balance, deep breathing, and relaxation.  Fri am #02306-06, Mon pm #02306-06

Back in Shape, Water Aerobics for Special Populations 

This class strengthens the back, neck, and abdominal muscles, helps increase the range of motion and flexibility, and is designed for those with arthritis or other mobility issues. Tu/Thu am #02405-02

Deep Water

This high-energy class uses floatation belts to provide a no-impact aerobic workout and strength building in the deep-end of the pool.  Water resistance in all directions provides a great calorie-burning workout.  Class is geared to all fitness levels, from the out-of-shape or injury recovering to the super-trained. Intensity Challenge

This is the most challenging aquatic fitness class offered, geared toward the serious exerciser.  Conducted in all water depths, this high-powered class is designed to enhance aerobic endurance, athletic performance, and strength using demanding exercises and elements that only a water environment can provide.  Students must be comfortable with both feet off the bottom of the pool at all water depths. Shallow

This class is designed to help students burn calories, develop aerobic stamina, and develop muscle strength through various fast-paced moves and resistance in shallow water. Pre/Post Natal

Mothers-to-be and new mothers exercise together in both the in shallow and deep water in this supportive atmosphere.  M/W pm #02201-13

Wake Up in the Water

Wake up without caffeine using great tunes and good times in this half-hour of shallow water movement, stretching, low impact and moderate cardio.  Its just right for all ages and fitness levels. Tu/Thu am #02306-05

YOUTH SPORTS

KinderSoccer (ages 3-5)

This introductory class will prepare your child for the game of soccer through basic fundamentals. These "FUN"damentals will include kicking, dribbling, and teamwork. All classes build on the ability and pace of the participants.

Biddy Basketball (ages 3-5)

This co-ed class will teach your child the basics of the game including dribbling, passing, defense, and shooting using fun drills and games. All classes build on the ability and pace of the participants.

Pee Wee Sports Sampler (ages 3-5)

This co-ed class will introduce your youngster to a variety of sports and games, including basketball, baseball, soccer, and floor hockey. All classes build on the ability and pace of the participants.

Junior Baseball (ages 6-9)

This class will focus on the game of baseball through instruction, including hitting, throwing, fielding, conditioning, and positional play.

Junior Soccer (ages 6-9)

This class will build upon the KinderSoccer class at a more rapid pace and teach positional play and game strategy.

Junior Basketball (ages 6-9)

This class builds on the basics of basketball, introduces plays, and teaches common drills. All classes build on the ability and pace of the participants.

Homeschool PE (ages 5-13)

Activities include sports, PE games, cooperative games, fitness, and more with recreational swimming every Thursday.

Sports Scrimmage (ages 8-11, 12-15)

Do you just want to play your favorite sports such as basketball, hockey, soccer, and flag football in a league-like atmosphere? This co-ed class offers you that chance to play your favorite sports and improve stamina and knowledge of the game!

Fall Soccer League (ages 2 1/2-13)

This fall league will give your child the opportunity to play soccer in a fun-filled environment. The league focuses on fun, instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship at all times. Every child plays and everyone is a winner! Fee includes a uniform, weekday practice, Saturday games, and awards ceremony.

Fall Baseball League (ages 2 1/2-13)

This fall league will give your child the opportunity to play baseball in a relaxed atmosphere and have fun when doing so. This league focuses on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Every child plays and everyone is a winner! Fee includes a team T-shirt, weekday practice, Saturday games, and awards ceremony.

Fall Flag Football League (ages 13-18)

This new and exciting flag football league will teach the basic fundamentals of the game. The rules will be unlike tackle football, but the skills learned will be the same. Your child will learn to catch, pass, and show off his or her speed. Fee includes jersey, weekday practice, Saturday games, and end-of-session banquet and awards.

YOUTH DANCE

Basic Movement and Dance (ages 3-5)

This class combines elementary dance principles with music, fun, and creativity. Students will work on improving their balance, coordination, and rhythm.

Beginning Ballet (ages 3-6)

This class introduces your child to a variety of movement, including ballet basics and elementary floor exercises. Participants will dance in an end-of-session performance and receive awards. This class moves at the pace and ability of its participants. Participants should wear a leotard and ballet slippers.

Beginning Tap Dancing (ages 5-7)

This class introduces your child to the basics of tap dancing and moves at the pace of its participants. Students will present an end-of session performance.

Advanced Tap Dancing (ages 7-14)

This class builds on beginning tap at a faster pace. Students will present an end-of-session performance.

Kindernastics (ages 3-5, 6-9)

Learn the fundamentals of gymnastics in a fun atmosphere. This class will develop coordination, motor skills, and flexibility using an array of gymnastic equipment.

Beginning Cheer (ages 5-7, 8-11)

This introductory class will introduce your young cheerleader to basic cheers and moves. This class moves at the pace of its participants. Student will perform learned routines.

Fun-n-Fitness (ages 1-3)

This parent-child class focuses on early socialization of children as they climb, jump, and run to music in our padded gym.

YOUTH ENRICHMENT

Pre-School Music (ages 2 1/2-5)

This class will cover fundamental music concepts such as rhythm, singing, listening, body awareness, and percussive instrumentation.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Tennis

As long as the weather permits, we offer group, semi-private, and private tennis instruction for students from beginner to advanced levels. Beginners will learn the basic four to five shots of tennis. Advanced beginners will continue improvements of ground strokes and start game playing. Intermediate and advanced players will work on perfecting strategy and knowledge of the game. ADULT DANCE

Belly Dance

This class will focus on core strength, body acceptance, isolations, and musical interpretation as well as building body, mind, and spirit, integrity, and strength. Alongside the breakdown and drilling of movements, the instructor will create a comfortable and challenging space to move with intuition and expression. Special attention will be placed on each student's level and learning style. Come and learn what your body can do as you shake, shimmy, and undulate. No previous dance knowledge required!

Progressive Salsa

Salsa, merengue, mambo -- following the latin beat is a fun way to burn calories! You will learn the basic elements of salsa music -- timing, rhythm, and step variations. These classes are for all fitness levels. Partners are recommended but not required.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Cardiovascular Orientation

How do I use the elliptical machine? What are the proper adjustments on the recumbent bike? What group fitness classes should I attend? All these questions are answered in this 30-minute orientation.

Equipment Orientation

Learn to use the Life Fitness strength equipment. A member of our Wellness staff will introduce you to six machines in the Life Fitness circuit. You will be shown proper seat settings, range of motion, and lifting technique.

FitLinxx(TM) Orientation

This is a one-time meeting with a FitLinxx trainer to help design a personalized fitness program using the computerized Cybex Eagle strength equipment. Your workout is tracked by computer. The FitLinxx program saves each strength training and cardio workout allowing you to track your progress. You may sign up for periodic reviews with a trainer.

4-Week Program

If you want to begin an exercise program but don't know where to begin then this program is for you! This program offers guidance, motivation, and structure to help you begin and stay with your fitness regime. Participants will meet with a trainer once a week for four weeks. The goal of the program is to develop a physical, active, healthy lifestyle.

Personal Training

Personal training is for everybody. Whether you are a novice or avid exerciser, a personal trainer will design a program based on your unique individual goals. You may be an athlete looking to perfect your game. You may have been working out for years and reached a plateau, or you may be a middle-aged Baby Boomer looking to slow the hands of time. GROUP HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Aerobic Classes

CardioLite

A low impact class with an emphasis on improving posture, balance, range of motion, flexibility, and muscle strength. Enjoy recess and relaxation segments also.

Dance 'n' Tone

An easy-to-follow choreographed dance aerobics class, plus a complete muscle-toning segment.

Hi/Low Aerobics

Moderate to high intensity cardiovascular workout followed by a cool-down and floor work.

Cardio 'n' Sculpt

A complete workout using a combination of hi/low, kickboxing, and Step followed by a strength training segment using body bars, hand weights, and tubing.

 

Kickboxing

An intense workout incorporating boxing and kickboxing moves.

Boot Camp

A military-style workout incorporating obstacle course, running drills, calisthenics, strength training, and core strengthening exercises. Meets outside. (10-week sessions with breaks in between sessions.)

Step

This fun-filled workout uses an adjustable step. There are several classes to choose from designed to meet the needs of any individual's fitness level.

Group Cycle Classes

Cycle classes are a great way to burn the most calories in the least amount of time. Come and experience the ride of a lifetime! We will also be offering specialty cycle classes. Call the Wellness Director or check our website for Group Cycle schedules.

Strengthening Classes

Core Conditioning

Focus is given to quads, glutes, hamstrings, abs, and low back muscles. The instructor will teach you how to strengthen your core muscles for improved posture and functional strength.

Muscle Up!

This isn't your parents' strength training class! Our nationally certified personal trainers will take you through a total body workout that will leave you stronger and leaner.

Pilates Level 1

An introduction to the basic principles of Pilates. Attention is given to breathing and proper form.

Get on the Ball

Using a stability ball, learn strength and balance exercises designed to improve core strength and flexibility.

Awesome Abs

This entire class focuses on abdominal work.

Stretch, Strengthen and Align

Blends stretching exercises with basic Pilates postures to improve flexibility, core awareness, and postural alignment.

Iron Maiden Lifting Club

This female-only class consists of several workout stations. Each station highlights a different muscle group. By the end of the class, each woman experiences a great total body workout as well as a great bonding time with her classmates.

Yoga Classes

Flow Yoga

The instructor will lead you through continuous movement, making this an intermediate to advanced level class.

Yoga Level I

This intro to yoga class introduces thousand-year-old yoga poses with slightly modified fitness-oriented movements.

SPECIALIZED HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Advanced Core Conditioning

Improve your abdominal strength for better posture, appearance, and prevention of lower back problems. This one-hour class includes stretching, serious abdominal work with added concentration on hips, thighs and gluteals, and a cool-down.

Speed and Agility Conditioning (SAC)

Calling all athletes (and would-be athletes)! This class will help you gain speed, strength, and endurance. Learn to jump higher, run faster, and quicken your "first step." Plyometric training is the base of this high-energy, fun-filled class.

Co-ed Karate/Self-Defense (ages 4 and older -- all levels)

This program specializes in self-defense, confidence building, and discipline development. Techniques include Karate, Ju-Jitsu, and flexibility exercises.

MIND/BODY HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Gentle Yoga

This class is for beginner and continuing yoga students. Based on Hatha Yoga, this class is a synthesis of various yoga traditions. The emphasis is on breath-linked movement, flowing from one position to another -- integrating alignment, stretching, and strengthening, with a focus on the mind-body connection.

Beginning/Continuing Hatha Yoga

Learn a complementary series of physical postures, breathing, deep relaxation, and meditation derived from an ancient system of holistic health and self-actualization.

Yoga Level 2

Take your yoga experience to the next level.

Pilates Level 2

This mat-based class concentrates on perfecting Pilates technique and movements.

Tai Chi

Tai C'hi is a form of movement that includes awareness of balance, spiral flow throughout the muscle and tendon structure of the body, breathing to stimulate the facia (connective tissues), and the awareness of Qi, a manifestation of vital energy that is the underlying basis for life. Qigong is the basic cultivation of Qi within the body to strengthen the immune system and internal organ function.

CHILD CARE

Your child is discovering all kinds of new worlds. That's why at YMCA Child Care we carefully design every activity to expand your kid's imagination and encourage lifelong positive values. Their newfound confidence naturally strengthens the relationship they have with you, and that progression is at the heart of our philosophy -- good child care is good family care. We offer: field trips, nutritious snacks, age-appropriate curriculum, winter and spring break camps, experienced professional staff, half-day and holiday special events, fun-filled activities, sports and fitness activities, enrichment activities, supervised homework time, and swimming classes.

Full- and part-time YMCA Child Care is divided into specific, age-appropriate programs that provide your kids with high-quality and enjoyable experiences. For infants and toddlers, personal attention, rich sensory experiences, and a generous supply of giggles are a big part of their day. Preschoolers learn the importance of making choices, taking turns, developing language skills, and working in a group while they play games and create to the limits of their imagination. School-aged kids join in a variety of experiences including: service-learning, science, reading, and developing and practicing social skills. They gather in a safe environment that focuses on making friends, building relationships, staying active, and exercising leadership skills.

YMCA Silver Spring Child Development Center Preschool (ages 18 months-5 years)

The goal of the YMCA Silver Spring Child Devlopment Center is to help each child develop to his/her fullest potential by providing a safe, supportive, challenging,  and caring environment that allows each child the opportunity to learn through friends, exploration, choice, socialization, and creative play.

Quality babysitting services are available for parents while they use the YMCA facilities or take classes or attend programs. Parents must be at the YMCA while their child is in our care.
