AQUATICS

YMCA aquatic activities encourage water safety, skill development and fitness. All classes reinforce important values and help students develop a positive self-image.

Preschool Swim Lessons (ages 3-5)

Children are in the water without parental assistance and are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. They also learn about pool safety and the use of personal flotation devices. Children will use flotation devices at the discretion of the instructor. Class length: 30 minutes

Youth Swim Lessons (ages 6-17 years)

This program is designed for children who have completed first grade or who are 6 years old. Classes are pupil-centered and use a problem solving, guided discovery teaching approach with an emphasis on learning, not passing or failing. Each level is repeated until the required skills are completed. Each level is divided into five components, including personal safety, stroke development, water sports/games, personal growth and rescue. Children will only use instructional flotation device if needed. Class length: 45 minutes

Aquatic Fitness

Exercising in the water has many benefits. It can improve your muscular tone, cardiovascular strength, and overall health. The water also provides resistance, allows for a greater range of motion, and acts as a cushion for your feet, knees and back.

Water Aerobics

A water workout for all! This exciting class is for both swimmers and non-swimmers who enjoy exercising to music. It is geared toward increasing cardiovascular output and muscle tone. Through exercising in the water, you can condition your body and heart.

YOUTH SPORTS

Youth Basketball League (ages 5-12 years)

Supervised by our athletic staff, this organized basketball program will enhance a youngster's basketball skills and fundamentals.

YOUTH ENRICHMENT

School Age

The Enrichment Program at YMCA Anthony Bowen has been established for the purpose of enhancing the educational and social experience of the students attending. The Academic Program structure of three days of tutoring and homework help on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays gives your child the chance to complete assignments. Students remain in the same Academic Program throughout the year.

This arrangement provides stability for students along with the natural mentoring that occurs through longstanding relationships. The Enrichment Program structure of two different activities per week on Tuesdays and Fridays for nine-week sessions is set up to give your child a variety of activities that can enhance their interest and keep them excited about the Enrichment Program. Additionally, it is our hope that your child may recognize talents and desires for future endeavors through this enrichment structure.

Our curriculum combines creativity, physical activities, reading, computer lessons, homework assistance, etiquette lessons, music, art, poetry, sports, swimming lessons, and field trips to help children develop strong motor, mental, and social skills. The YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are emphasized in our programs. Call (202) 462-1054 or see the Program Director for more information.

CHILD CARE

Your child is discovering all kinds of new worlds. That's why at YMCA Child Care we carefully design every activity to expand your kid's imagination and encourage lifelong positive values. Their newfound confidence naturally strengthens the relationship they have with you, and that progression is at the heart of our philosophy -- good child care is good family care. We offer: field trips, nutritious snacks, age-appropriate curriculum, winter and spring break camps, experienced professional staff, half-day and holiday special events, fun-filled activities, sports and fitness activities, enrichment activities, supervised homework time, and swimming classes.

Full- and part-time YMCA Child Care is divided into specific, age-appropriate programs that provide your kids with high-quality and enjoyable experiences. For infants and toddlers, personal attention, rich sensory experiences, and a generous supply of giggles are a big part of their day. Preschoolers learn the importance of making choices, taking turns, developing language skills, and working in a group while they play games and create to the limits of their imagination. School-aged kids join in a variety of experiences including: service-learning, science, reading, and developing and practicing social skills. They gather in a safe environment that focuses on making friends, building relationships, staying active, and exercising leadership skills.

Child Care (ages 6 weeks-5 years)

The Anthony Bowen Child Development Center provides exceptional child care. We focus on teaching life skills in a safe environment. We provide a staff of skilled professionals trained to prepare your child for achievement in kindergarten and beyond. Our Center has often been called a "school" because it uses a host of factors, including developmental checklists, teacher observation, and parental input to determine a child's readiness to advance to the next program. For more information about our Child Development Center, please call (202) 462-1054.

Before- and After-School Care (ages 5-14)

The YMCA offers Before-School Care, which includes breakfast and transportation to school every day. We also offer After-School Care activities, which include computer time, sports and games, arts and crafts, and music. Children have fun while learning about respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty. Transportation from school is provided. Contact the Before- and After-School Care Director at (202) 462-1054 for more information.

Parents' Night Out (ages 5-14)

Parents can bring their children to the YMCA on designated Fridays to take advantage of a night out. Children from 5 to 14 years old will enjoy fun activities, movies, and games. Call (202) 462-1054 for more information.
